Step 1: Add HDMI-in port to an automobile's infotainment system

Step 2: Repeat for every other automobile you make.

I dont know if HDMI has the return data path big enough. Even with HDMI + ethernet.

how are you going to get the touch function of the screen back to the phone? integrate the volume controls and other media functions? it needs to be a two way street, we could do it with a mirror cast like device, im just saying HDMI might not be the preferred connector.

HDMI input doesn't have to be the ONLY option.

Actually, they should just have a dock for your phone. The dock would connect the phone to car as a power source and for speakers. For example, in the Accord, the top screen can be the docked phone, instead of in-car nav.

I'm saying with the proper interface, more likely display port and something like a chromecast your idea would work flawlessly.

I'm ok with USB. Good enough video for a car, two way communication, fits more existing devices.

how much data do you need?!

Renault offers something similar with their new Twingo. A blank touchscreen that connects to your phone. Their reasoning being that their target demographic has better/newer/more up to date navigation/music/porn/whatever on their phones than anything a car company can offer with their much longer product cycles, let alone the car getting older.

Well say you have 1000 data points on the touch screen you'd need to track all of that very quickly if you want it to be responsive.

Nothing a properly built interface and USB couldn't handle. I'm actually not a big fan of USB but I am in favor of including as many existing devices as possible.

USB even USB 3.0 has latency issues that something like display port doesnt. USB is meant to operate on a hub system, Display port is a direct connection.

Eh. As long as in-car OSs can get OTAs, I don't think it's much of a problem.

Totally agree, but I doubt many portable devices will have that kind of power for a while yet.

Smart! I mean, figuratively, not the brand. You'd think it'd be cheaper, and a selling point. I'm surprised more manufacturers haven't picked up on this yet.

I'm honestly surprised you say that USB has such latency. Considering all the USB mice and keyboards I've used that have never had issues, I'm guessing it's more of a software problem. (That coming from a computer programmer...)

it has more to do with transmitting ultra-high resolution at the same time as the data points. you'd probably want to separate video and control data. the reason why you notice no latency with your keyboard and mouse is the amount of data they are sending is very very small. granted we're talking about milliseconds of delay. for reference USB 3.0 is roughly 10 gb/s max, where as display port is 21.6 gb/s

It's just a bigger pipe, and if you're going to future proof something bigger is better. I mean theoretically we could use a 2x wide Thunderbolt to acheive the same effect, but i hate giving royalty money to apple and intel on each device sold.
